Waiting for star Raven Symone to take the stage, 14-year-old Kelsey Lenoch made a confession.

"I don't really listen to her music," Lenoch said.

That, however, was no damper on her enthusiasm for the evening.

"I like her show, though, and she used to be one of my favorite Disney people."

There may be a reason that Lenoch and other Symone fans aren't actually familiar with her music: weak lyrics and thin tunes make the songs fairly forgettable. Yet, Symone, former star of "The Cosby Show" and "That's So Raven," can pack a house. Having grown up in the entertainment industry, the 22-year-old Disney veteran knows her demographic of young girls who would rather scream than cheer and is a master at connecting with it.

From her grand opening, Symone matched the high energy in the room, entering with an ear-splitting, "What's going on?!" She maintained that energy through her hour-long set of songs ranging from "Typical," "Jump In" and "Get It Girl" to a rendition of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition."

Dressed in vest, tie and tennis shoes, down-to-earth Symone danced her way into the hearts of her audience, flanked by a four-member posse of back-up dancers who stole the show on more than one occasion. Where her music was lacking, her showmanship more than compensated. With no stage effects or sets, Symone crafted an evening of dance and dialogue, pulling the audience onstage to ask questions, man the mic or play back-up dancer.

Between high-energy dance numbers, Symone mixed slower ballads with messages of strength and confidence for girls. Some songs spoke about confidence in one's body, no matter your size. Others spoke specifically to issues her listeners face on a daily basis, such as "Keep A Friend," talking about the importance of holding onto friends.

Symone finished the night with a crowd pleasing "Double Dutch Bus," raising the house of screaming girls to its feet.

Symone's show was opened by 15-year-old aspiring rocker Emily Shelton, a sophomore at Andover High School. Shelton was followed by Olathe, Kan., rock band Starlit Platoon.

"There's a lot of girls here," observed lead singer Brandon Estelle looking out over the audience.

Clearly out of its element and sandwiched between girl rocker and girl rapper, Starlit Platoon still worked the crowd of preteens, coaxing an auditorium of young girls to jump with the music. Though its music seemed unfamiliar to most, it managed to deliver a high energy show.

For fans like Krystal Davis, the concert was a chance for a girls' night. Admitted Disney junkies, Davis and her five daughters, aged 18 months to 18 years, showed up in full Cheetah gear, a tribute to Symone's days with the Cheetah Girls.

"The dancing and choreography were phenomenal," Davis said. "I just like to see Raven dance. She's so down to earth."

"We wouldn't have missed this for anything."
